Germs From Pet Dogs Might Protect Infants Against Infection, Researchers Say
THURSDAY, Aug. 6, 2026 (HealthDay News) — Kids with pet dogs get fewer respiratory tract infections and require fewer rounds of antibiotics than children not exposed to canines, a new study says.
Microbes from dogs appear to provide some protection to children, helping them remain healthier on average, researchers reported recently in the journal Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.
As much as a quarter of this good health among children is linked to bacteria and fungi found among dogs, researchers said.
“The results strengthen our understanding that the microbial environment during early childhood plays an important role in the development of a child’s immune system,” said lead researcher Jenni Mäki, a pediatrician at Kuopio University Hospital in Finland.
“It has been suggested that in the future it may be possible to modify the home microbiota in ways that promote health,” Mäki said in a news release. “Our study shows that dog ownership already does this today.”
For the new study, researchers followed 368 Finnish children during the first year of their lives, tracking their respiratory infections and antibiotic prescriptions.
The team also assessed levels of 12 bacterial and 2 fungal species in the children’s homes introduced by pet dogs. About one-third of the homes had a family dog.
Results showed that eight of these dog-associated microbes individually explained 10% to 23% of a child’s protection against illness and fever.
In addition, three types of bacteria explained 25% of dog-associated reductions in antibiotic use among the children.
“It seems that certain dog-associated microbes support children's health and provide strong protection against upper respiratory tract infections at a time when the development of immunological response is at its most sensitive,” researchers concluded in their paper. “Although the percentage of mediation that was observed was rather small, this is the first indication that microbial exposure seems to play a role in the protective effect of dog keeping.”
This protection could provide huge dividends for children’s health as they grow and develop, researchers said.
“Respiratory tract infections in early childhood are a significant risk factor for asthma. When some of children’s respiratory tract infections can be prevented with dog-associated microbes, this may also reduce the child’s risk of developing asthma later in life,” chief researcher Anne Karvonen of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare said in a news release.
